The Starvation Diet – Does It Work?

You may have heard about the starvation diet but what is it and does it work?

The starvation diet is just what it sounds like, not eating, or eating very little all day long.

Naturally, this is not healthy for you, but some people do it anyway. One of the reasons why people use this kind of diet is because they are that desperate to lose weight and they feel that if they starve themselves then the pounds will just fall off.

You can lose weight by starving yourself but it will take you much longer than you may expect.

One of the reasons why this will happen is because when you starve yourself your metabolism slows down or stops completely. Your metabolism is the process that your body goes through every time you have something to eat and is a collection of chemical reactions that converts the fuel inside food into energy that our body requires.  Your metabolism also needs fuel in order for it to work efficiently. It is just like a machine, without fuel, it shuts down.

In order to burn fat in your body, you need to have a healthy metabolism so that the process of turning fuel into energy works efficiently.

What happens when your metabolism shuts down?

When your metabolism shuts down, your body goes into starvation mode and actually starts to conserve its fuel. This means that everything starts to shut down, just like your car would if you did not put fuel into it.

Also when your metabolism shuts down you do not burn off calories or lose fat. You end up staying as you are and you may also find yourself feeling sick.

The reason for this is because when your metabolism shuts down, your immune system also shuts down. This is one of the reasons why people who try to starve themselves generally always feel sick.

There is also another reason why starvation diets do not work. After being on this diet for a while your body will begin to start craving food and as you begin to become weaker and weaker it will also become harder for you to resist temptation. You then may give in to this temptation and then gorge yourself on something that is full of fat and not very good for you. Then you might feel angry with yourself for giving in to temptation and try to starve yourself again, or make yourself sick.

These two conditions are commonly known as binge eating or bulimia and they can both have devastating effects on your health and well being.
